Live performance of Their Eyes Were Watching God

This 90-minute educational event immerses students in literary analysis and arts-integrated activities to examine themes of courage, self-identity, life choices, and decision-making in Zora Neale Hurston’s beloved novel Their Eyes Were Watching God. Students experience a 20-minute performance adaptation of excerpted, verbatim material from the book. This is followed by a special character talk-back during which students speak directly with characters from the novel to explore its key themes. Finally, students participate in on-their-feet dramatic activities that challenge them to think and respond critically to problems faced by the novel’s protagonist. This culminates in cooperative and creative work, in small and large groups, to explore how the students relate and connect to the major themes in the novel.
