Reading RoomA coming-of-age play about a young Chicana growing up in a Chicago barrio. A “yellow weed among the city cracks,” this heroine faces the harsh realities of her neighborhood while holding on to the dream of what she will someday become.
This Literature to Life original adapted in 2002 features forty five minutes of verbatim performance from this lyrical American novel. Incorporating the full text from eight of the book’s poetic vignettes including Red Clowns and A House of My Own, the actress embodies the fierce and brave spirit of the book’s heroine Esperanza in an energetic and very physical performance. She leads us through a unique theatrical event in which audience members are invited on stage to interact with the text and will leave feeling not only intimately connected to the characters but to each other. Surrounded by a pre and post show interactive discussion the audience will explore themes including cultural heritage and gender roles.
