Reading RoomIn a dystopian world where all is the same, twelve-year-old Jonas is selected to receive the memories of a far different life.

This Literature to Life Award winner was adapted in 2009 and marked the first young adult novel on the Literature to Life roster. Newly adapted by Associate Artistic Director Elise Thoron, this piece features sixty minutes of solo-performance focusing on the relationship between the young Jonas and his mentor, The Giver. As Jonas trains to become the Receiver of Memories, the buried truth about the world that he was born into becomes hauntingly clear to both Jonas and the audience. Surrounded by a pre and post show interactive discussion, the audience will explore themes including Individuality, Ethics and Social Constructs.

Recent Literature to Life Stage Presentations of The Giver by Lois Lowry at Raritan Valley Community College brought together hundreds of people of all ages. Many in our audiences were under 18 years of age, no doubt because The Giver is a beloved young readers’ novel. Yet, there were folks in our audiences who ranged in age from nineteen to ninety.

"I really thought I was in front of Jonas. Books are really things to be read and imagined. It was the best way to visualize The Giver."Eva Silva,
